20/04/2010 - ZERO POVERTY

A woman is challenged by the authorities because her children are off school again. One of our workers visits and builds trust. Far from being neglectful, Mum says she's too proud to send her children off to school in shabby clothes but too poor to renew or replace them.

A child is deemed to be on the obesity scale and health visitors worry. A meal can be a bag of crisps and chocolate biscuits: high energy, quick and cheap. Our workers get involved and help with budgeting for a family struggling with healthy eating on a wage not able to cover the needs of a growing family.

We see many such stories of pain and hidden misery.

Material poverty is not always obvious. Sometimes it wears masks. Worst of all, those who are silently struggling in poverty are sometimes judged and derided by those of us who often have more than we need. Often it is easier to judge than to understand; easier to walk by than to walk alongside.

Poverty is here. Poverty is real. Poverty is on our doorstep. It affects individuals and families of all shapes, sizes, histories and circumstances. It often causes shame, despair, sadness, misery and guilt. In children, it can foster feelings of anger, jealousy, maladaptive responses, quiet withdrawal or hiding.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?

Zero Poverty – a community of people who want to make a difference - is a campaign for greater social justice. These are difficult times. Many are suffering. With a common effort however, something can be done to support the most vulnerable and lobby for change. We need 1,000,000 signatures to be heard at EU level. Do your bit for all who suffer the scandal of poverty. Tell your friends:
